As part our Community outreach & engagement activities last april Company Danzante premier is first Trainee Program.
This program serves as one of Company Danzante’s Arts Education Initiatives and gives students training at a pre-professional level the opportunity to work with professional artists in their community.
Today we are here with Rachael Mauney to talk about the new work she will be setting for our first series with our Trainee Program.
CO/DA. Hi Rachael, how are you doing today?
RM. Good, excited to start working with the trainees on this new choreography titled “the memories fall behind us.”
Great, we are excited too. What can you tell us about this work?
This work investigates the concept of initial fear. I’m researching that moment in our experience as human beings that teaches us to be afraid. I’m interested in the philosophy of fear, what makes us afraid, how we can overcome that. I think we all have fears that we can eventually use to become stronger people and I want to know more about what that is, what stories can inspire us to find courage. For me, this process started with the experimental labs that we have been working at Co/Da. We get together several times a week just to discuss ideas and play with different phrases. I love being a part of something that is always evolving and working with people who are just curious about their ideas. That’s what I want to do with trainees, is keep asking these questions and keep experimenting with the idea.
CO/DA. What else can you tell us about the trainee program with Company Danzante?
RM. Well, this work will be developed for five students who were invited to participate in this outreach initiative with the company for our performance e over National Dance Week. The students will take a weekly class with the company, learn repertory, and have rehearsals for their own piece. This is an opportunity for them to think about how they might be able to pursue this career. Co/Da is a young company and we have a lot of exciting things developing, so it will be an experience for the trainees to really see how the field works and options dancers have.
CO/DA. And the showing will be a part of National Dance Week?
RM. Yes. “the memories fall behind us” will be shown at Company Danzante’s performance on April 26th at 6:30pm. You’ll get to see two of the company’s existing repertory works, as well as this new piece for the trainees. Come support the company, join us for reception afterwards to talk more about the work!
Thanks for having this conversation with us. We’re looking forward to seeing the show!
